this month’s craft
Sugar skulls
Adapt this craft to use any mold you have. Also known as calaveras, this is a traditional craft for Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, celebrated in Mexico in connection with Halloween or All Soul’s Day.
Combine 1/4 cup of meringue powder (available at specialty craft or baking stores, or online) with an entire 5-pound bag of white sugar. Thoroughly mix with 10 tablespoons of water. Press firmly into molds. Place a piece of cardboard over the backside of the mold, flip over and tap to remove the skul (or other shape). Allow to dry at least 8 hours or overnight. Paint with frosting – royal icing works best.
